Playa del Rey, nestled on the west side of Los Angeles, offers a serene, picturesque backdrop that feels worlds away from the city's busy streets. Known for its broad, sandy beaches and the nearby Ballona Wetlands, this area blends natural beauty with a laid-back vibe. With Marina del Rey to the north and Dockweiler Beach to the south, it’s a quiet, lesser-known gem compared to more crowded LA beaches like Santa Monica or Venice Beach. The area’s appeal lies in its unassuming nature, making it an ideal spot for intimate moments like engagement shoots.
When I photographed Iris and Todd’s engagement session here, it felt like we had stumbled upon our own little world. We started at their beach house, capturing some cozy indoor moments with their dog, Lady, who sported an adorable flower crown for the occasion. Indoors, they dressed to impress—Todd in a suit and tie, and Iris in a sleek white sheath dress (a fitted style that ends just below the knees, perfect for a modern, elegant look).
The second half of our shoot took us to the beach, where the couple changed into more casual attire. Todd wore a light blue button-up shirt with slacks, and Iris opted for a simple, flowy white dress—an effortless choice that perfectly suited the relaxed vibe by the water. Although the day was overcast, the soft, diffused lighting gave a romantic glow to the photos. The clouds acted like a natural lightbox, adding an ethereal feel that made the session even more special.
Playa del Rey is part of the famed Marvin Braude Bike Trail, also known as “The Strand,” which stretches 22 miles along the coast. The area is dotted with parks, like Del Rey Lagoon Park, a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. While Playa del Rey may not have the bustling surf scene it once did, thanks to the marina’s breakwater altering the waves, it remains a favorite among locals for its peaceful setting and scenic bike paths. It’s also close enough to Los Angeles International Airport that you might catch a plane flying overhead—just another layer to the dynamic setting of this beach town.
What I loved most about this session was how it embodied the couple’s personality. The switch between indoor intimacy and open beach freedom mirrored the beauty of balancing quiet moments with adventure. For couples looking for engagement photography in Los Angeles, Playa del Rey offers the perfect combination of cozy charm and scenic beauty. Whether you start your session indoors or head straight for the shore, this neighborhood has a way of making every moment feel special.
