Chapman University grad photo, cap raised, brick path

I had her turn her back to the camera and look over her shoulder instead of facing forward — a small direction change, but it's what makes the raised cap read as a moment instead of a pose. One leg bent up behind her, red heel catching the light, arm extended straight overhead: that's a stance I walked her through step by step, not something that happens naturally when someone's just standing for a photo.

The brick wall running alongside the path gave me a clean line to shoot along, and I timed it for the late-afternoon sun coming through the trees behind her — enough backlight to rim her hair and soften the whole background without blowing out her face.

This is where directing really matters in a graduation portrait session: the location and light set the stage, but it's the posing that turns a nice backdrop into a portrait someone will actually want on their wall.

Location: Chapman University, Orange CA.
