I positioned her so the sun sat almost directly behind that arm holding the bubble wand — that's what turns backlight into a rim of light around her whole silhouette instead of just a bright sky behind her. Most natural light photographers treat the sun as something to work around. I treat it the way a studio photographer treats a flash: something to place, angle, and shape on purpose, not just hope for.
That's the real difference in how I approach a shot like this. A lot of natural light shooters never learn the studio side of lighting, so they miss how deliberate light placement actually is. Coming from both backgrounds, I use the sun the same way I'd use a softbox — positioning the subject relative to it, not just waiting for good light to happen.
UCLA Royce Hall's towers give the frame its scale, and the bubbles catch the last of the gold light on their way up, but it's the light placement itself that pulls the whole graduation portrait together.
